Seeking Volunteers to Hand Out Free Meals for Kids and Teens in Orleans

The summer meal program in Orleans, which provides free, nutritious meals to children in the area, is seeking volunteers! This role is for meal distribution onsite at the Orleans Federated Church (OFC), where meals will be handed out four days a week.

The volunteers will pick up meals at the Barton Graded School (137 Church Street) on Monday through Thursday at 11 a.m., bring them to the Orleans Federated Church (24 School Street), and distribute them to children and teens from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. To volunteer or if you have questions, contact Linda Michniewicz at lmichniewicz@buildingbrightfutures.org.

Volunteer Time:

Volunteers will need to pick up meals at Barton Graded School at 11 a.m., transport the meals to the Orleans Federated Church, and distribute meals to children and parents between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. at the Orleans Federated Church. Volunteers will be trained in the meal check-in/check-out procedures prior to volunteering, and will need to view a short training video.

Shifts:

Meal distribution volunteers are needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from about 11 a.m. until about 12:15 p.m. (Wednesday shifts have already been covered by a volunteer.) Meals begin on Tuesday, June 18 and run until July 25. If you are only able to help for a few weeks or a day here and there, please don’t hesitate to sign up! We need your help to establish this food resource for kids in Orleans.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be able to lift about 25 lbs. and have reliable transportation.

Many children receive free breakfast and lunch through school programs, but in the summer, our summer meal program takes the place of those meals to help feed children throughout our community. You can help kids in your community get the good, nutritious food they need this summer!
