Children’s well-being can be negatively affected not only by bad things that happen to them such as physical trauma, but also by the absence of essential experiences in infancy and early childhood.

Neglect is by far the most common form of child maltreatment in the United States. In 2013, nationally, four-fifths (79 percent) of victims were neglected, 18.0 percent were physically abused, 9.0 percent were sexually abused and 8.7 percent were psychologically maltreated.
